CARY, N.C. (January 9, 2023) – The Cary Theater is celebrating the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an exciting Dreamfest weekend of arts programming at the theater. The schedule includes a performance by stand-up comic Azeem on Friday, Jan. 13. Two documentary film screenings will take place Sunday, Jan. 15, that are FREE to the public: Alice Street and Let The Little Light Shine. “We’re excited to showcase a weekend of unique programming, including two documentary films that embody Dr. King’s inspirational legacy of social justice and community service,” said Lani Simeona, Cary Theater operations and program supervisor. “Both films are free to attend and include talkback discussions with the filmmakers.”
STAND-UP COMEDY: AZEEM – Friday, Jan. 13, 8:00p
The “conscious comic” has a gift for keeping audiences laughing and pondering everyday issues. Azeem’s appeared on BET, Comedy Central and Night Shift with Kevin Ferguson. Tickets are available for this show priced at $15.
ALICE STREET – Sunday, Jan. 15, 2:00p
In rapidly gentrifying Oakland, new luxury condos threaten a mural created by local artists, forcing the community to rally to protect its cultural history. Followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with film director, Spencer Wilkinson. FREE but a ticket is required to attend.
LET THE LITTLE LIGHT SHINE – Sunday, Jan. 15, 4:30p
A high-achieving elementary school in Chicago is a lifeline for Black children, until gentrification threatens its closure and replacement by a new high school for the elite. A community coalition is formed to fight for the elementary school’s survival. Followed by a Q&A with film director, Kevin Shaw. FREE but a ticket is required to attend.

Located at 122 E. Chatham St., the Cary Theater lights up downtown with its mission to provide a unique setting for the community to experience art house cinema and live performances that enhance their cultural arts experience. The theater is owned by the Town of Cary and operated by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources. It is also home to the BEYOND: The Cary Film Festival. For the past five year, the festival has featured independent short films from around the world alongside a screenwriting competition and filmmaking/screenwriting workshops.
