We kick off our first
Science on Screen® event with an evening devoted to the science of beer! We are joined by Brewmaster Whit Baker of Downtown Cary’s new Bond Brothers Beer Company to offer an informative look at the science behind brewing beer after the screening.
Science on Screen® creatively pairs classic, cult, and documentary films with notables from the worlds of science, technology, and medicine. Each film is used as a jumping off point for a speaker to talk about interesting and relevant scientific research or technological advances, providing the perfect combination of entertainment and enlightenment! It’s where the movies and science collide!

Hilarity ensures when Jimmy Potts and Elmer J. Butts come up with a scheme to start up a beer brewery with the hope that Prohibition will soon be over. However, things don’t work out exactly as they planned, and they end up in a mess of trouble. This 1933 comedy starring Buster Keaton and Jimmy Durante, and directed by Edward Sedgwick. was made during what is known as Pre-Code Hollywood. This was a brief era in the American film industry between the introduction of sound pictures in 1929 and the enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code censorship guidelines in 1934. The screening is followed by a talk about the science of brewing beer.

Bond Brothers Beer Company started as a group of brewers competing in local and regional homebrew competitions. Their success in these competitions fueled the desire to brew on a commercial level. Certified Cicerone Brewmaster Whit Baker and crew have developed a vast array of proven recipes to satisfy all craft beer lovers. Whether you enjoy stouts, IPAs, Saisons or Sours, Bond Brothers beer offerings are sure to please.
Bond Brothers decided to make historic downtown Cary their home. They chose downtown Cary based largely on the revitalization movement taking place there. Their recently completed industrial modern space is quickly becoming a popular epicenter in the downtown community. With over 9000 square feet of brewery, taproom and beer garden to enjoy, they have built a destination that matches the quality of their beers.
